Interview: Solomon “Sully” Tyson

1. What made you decide to come to Rutgers?

Because my mother works at the university, I don’t have to pay tuition 🙂

2. What has your Rutgers experience been like so far (extra curriculars, favorite classes, etc.)?

I’ve mostly participated in the marching and pep bands at Rutgers. Being a Music Performance major, I get my fill of class that I like. But the one I’ve had the most fun with is Symphonic Winds with Dr Nichols (Director of Bands).

3. What made you choose your instrument?

In 5th grade I didn’t want to play the clarinet so I chose saxophone instead and never looked back.

4. What made you decide to join Mu Beta Psi?

I knew I wanted to be a part of Greek life at Rutgers but I wasn’t sure where to start. Over the Covid year I did my research on MBPsi but I never expected to find them until I joined marching band and met some of the members there. And the rest is history.

5. What has being in Mu Beta Psi been like for you?

I’ve really valued my time in Psi. Meeting people I would’ve probably not have talked to otherwise gives you a lot of perspective on how big and diverse this university. It’s really special to be around the people that share the same interests and values as you do.

6. Do you have a favorite memory in Mu Beta Psi?

I have 3:

Late night runs to IHOP and The Somerset Diner with the brothers.

My first National Convention at Upsilon Chapter at Stetson University in Florida last year (2023).

Mu Upsilon Alpha’s 50th Anniversary Celebration that we hosted here on campus.

7. What do you like to do in your free time?

When I’m not practicing (jk I don’t practice) or with the band on campus. I like to watch TV and Movies.

8. Do you have any advice for anyone interested in joining Mu Beta Psi or looking to get more involved?

Always stay curious. Ask us questions! There’s always someone close by that can help you out.
